I exposed students to many examples of poetry in the library and taught students about some different types of poems. Many students learned about the elements of a good poem, and wrote their own poems during their library classes. A fifth grade class wrote Rain Cinquain poems, some students wrote Winter Alliterations for publication in the local paper!

We celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday by reading books and viewing websites.
Some students wrote their own "I Have a Dream" speeches

The entire school celebrated Dr. Seuss'
birthday on March 2 with a special
Read Across America Day.
We celebrated in the library all week
by reading Dr. Seuss books and watching
Dr. Seuss movies. We made a timeline
of the events in Dr. Seuss' life

Books and activities to extend experiences from reading are important aspects of student learning. I use enriching activities with books in all areas of the curriculum.

Life Science Thematic Unit
I engaged the students in two separate classrooms in units on Life Science. This thematic unit, appropriate for third or fourth grades, integrates all areas of the curriculum in learning about plants and animals.

I completed an Action Research Project involving A Study of the Effects of Cooperative Learning Strategies on the Motivation of a High-Ability Student during my internship and completion of my Master's Degree in Curriculum & Instruction.
